One of the best things to cuddle up with at night, whilst dreaming away of tea parties and beautiful dresses and shoes to match, is your trustworthy teddy bear! Now if you have one of these soft, plushy, little creatures in your bed, You know how lovey they can truly be, Did you know why the teddy bear came to be or how he got his name?
Well it is very interesting it all started when our former United States President Theodore Roosevelt took a hunting trip to Mississippi. He was invited by the Mississippi Governor at the time Andrew H. Longino in November 1902. There were several other men out there competing and most of the hunters had already hunted animals successfully. After a group of hunters, that Roosevelt was with, had chased an American Black bear for an exhausting long period of time and then cornered, clubbed, and then tied to a willow tree. They then suggested that the President to shoot the bear. Theodore Roosevelt was so disgusted by the way these man had treated the poor animal that he refused to shoot it stating that it was “un-sportsmen like”. This incident later became a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post, which then became a very famous story. Morris Michtom saw this cartoon and the drawing of the poor, cute bear and decided to create a teddy bear. He created the soft baby cub and put in his window shop with a sign that so cleverly said “Teddy’s bear”, he first send a bear to Roosevelt to receive permission to use his name. The bears as you can probably guess were an immediate success, which lead to Michtom starting the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. That is quiet a story behind one of the most popular toys out there.
The first teddy bears were made to replicate real bears, They had extended snouts and beady eyes. Nowadays they have larger eyes and foreheads and smaller noses in order to create a cuter toy. Not only can you get the teddy bear in the American Black bear style, but now you can get different species, such as polar bears, grizzly bears, and panda bears. What type bears do you like?
